ダグラス・ボストック氏より第2回定期演奏会に向けたメッセージ！

グスターヴ・ホルストの「第１組曲」は、交響吹奏楽の歴史のはじまりである20世紀初頭の1909年に作曲されて以来、多くの作曲家に多大な影響を及ぼしてきました。今回私たちは伊藤康英さんによって新しく校訂された版を演奏します。こちらの版では、ホルストが実際にイメージしていた音を聴くことができます。バリトン・ホーンとユーフォニアムが別のパートとして独立している事も、バンドのサウンド面で重要な役割を担っています。

第１組曲を作曲してから20数年後の1930年に書かれた「ハマースミス」は全く新しいスタイルで、彼の成熟した芸術の集大成をみることができます。元々はBBC放送吹奏楽団のために作曲されましたが、後にホルスト自身によって1931年に管弦楽に編曲されています。ハマースミスはホルストがかつて住んでいた土地で、ロンドンのテムズ河岸に位置します。そこで彼は音楽教師として生計を立てながら第１組曲を作曲しました。ハマースミスでは、穏やかなテムズ川の流れと、街の忙しい暮らしを対比的に表現しており、ホルスト後期の典型的な音楽性を感じることができます。

「ムーアサイド組曲」はハマースミスの３年前に作曲されました。元々は英国式金管バンドの為の作品でしたが、ホルスト自身によって吹奏楽への編曲作業を開始しました。しかし、ホルスト自身、吹奏楽版は第１楽章だけしか完成しておらず、彼が信頼を置いていたデニス・ライトが1934年に完成させました。
この曲はイギリスの民謡のメロディを使うわけでなく、田舎ののどかな雰囲気を連想させる音楽になっています。

演奏会の後半では、イギリスの作曲家であるデリク・ブルジョアが作曲した「コッツウォルド交響曲」という素晴らしい作品を演奏します。この曲は元々、管弦楽の為に1988年に作曲され、2000年に吹奏楽版に編曲されました。この交響曲はブルジョアが尊敬していたホルストの生誕地である、南西イングランドにある美しい丘陵地帯、“コッツウォルド”に敬意を表しています。

It will be my pleasure to collaborate with the Shion Wind Orchestra for the second time in October this year in an exceptional programme of British music, including three contrasting works by Gustav Holst.

Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat stands right at the beginning of the story of symphonic music for wind orchestra at the beginning of the 20th Century and has had a profound influence on composers since its composition in 1909. We will be using the new “Urtext” edition prepared by Ito Yasuhide, which allows us to hear the work as Holst really conceived it. The division of the baritone and euphonium parts, for example is crucial to the sound of the work.

The Prelude and Scherzo “Hammersmith”, written over twenty years later, in 1930, is in a very different style and displays the mature composers mastery of his art. Originally written for the professional BBC Military band, Holst transcribed it in 1931 for symphony orchestra. Hammersmith is an area of London on the banks of the River Thames, where Holst had lived as a music teacher at the time he composed the First Suite. The highly personal score, typical for Holt’s late musical language, depicts the steady flow of the great river in contrast to the bustling life in the city.

“A Moorside” Suite” was written three years before “Hammersmith” originally for British style brass band. Holst himself started to arrange the work for wind orchestra, but completed only the first movement. It was left to Denis Wright to make a complete transcription, faithful to Holt’s own style, in 1934. The music conjures up the English countryside without actually referring to any folk song material.

In the second part of the programme we will perform the magnificent “A Cotswold Symphony by the British composer Derek Bourgeois, which he wrote originally for symphony orchestra in 1988 and subsequently reworked for winds in 2000 – the other way round from Holst’s “Hammersmith”. The Symphony pays homage to the beautiful hilly area in Southwest England, called the Cotswolds, the birthplace of Gustav Holst, a composer whom Bourgeois revered.
