I have known Philip Sparke’s music since the mid-1980s, when I conducted “Gaudium”, his first published composition for wind orchestra. It’s appealing musical language attracted me immediately. In the last 25 years Philip has become a good friend and I have conducted his works extensively both in concert and recordings. His hugely significant contribution to the repertoire for wind orchestra is undisputed.

I appreciate Philip’s compositional craft very much, his way of getting his musical ideas down on paper (or in the computer), his feeling for musical form, and his mastery of instrumentation. These traits together with a seemingly endless fountain of melodic ideas are already apparent in early works like the cheerful “Jubilee Overture” from 1983/84. In the 1990s Philip’s music explored new and more ambitious musical paths in compositions such as “Dance Movements” (1996), which I had the pleasure of recording with Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.

In recent years Philip’s compositions have reached new heights of maturity and mastery. A wonderful breadth of expression and intense humanity are experienced by players and listeners alike. “A Colour Symphony” (2014) and the Euphonium Concerto “Omaggio” (2022) exemplify this style. These beautifully crafted works surpass the boundaries of the wind orchestra repertoire. They are examples of a contemporary composer in touch with his audience and performers without forfeiting his originality. Communication though music is an essential aspect of Philip’s art, which we have all come to cherish.

フィリップ・スパークの音楽は、1980年代半ばに彼が初めて吹奏楽のために作曲した「Gaudium」を指揮して以来とてもよく知っている。その魅力的な音楽表現に私はすぐに魅了されました。
この25年でフィリップとは良き友人になり、私はコンサートでもレコーディングでも彼の作品を幅広く指揮してきました。ウィンドオーケストラのレパートリーに対する彼の多大な貢献は疑う余地がありません。
私は、フィリップの作曲技術、音楽的アイデアを譜面に書き留める方法、音楽形式に対する感覚、楽器編成の熟練度を非常に高く評価しています。「Jubilee Overture」（1983/84年）のような初期の作品には、これらの特徴とメロディーのアイディアが無限に湧き出てくるかのような才能がすでに見て取れます。1990年代に入ると、フィリップの音楽は、東京佼成ウインドオーケストラと録音する機会に恵まれた「Dance Movements」（1996年）のような、より野心的で新しい音楽の道を探求するようになります。
近年、フィリップの作曲は成熟と熟達の新たな高みに達していると感じています。素晴らしい表現の幅と強烈な人間性が、奏者と聴き手の双方に貴重な体験をさせてくれます。「A Colour Symphony」（2014年）とユーフォニアム協奏曲「Omaggio」（2022年）は、このスタイルを体現しています。
これらの美しく作り上げられた作品は、吹奏楽のレパートリーの枠を超えているでしょう。これらは、現代の作曲家がオリジナリティを失うことなく、聴衆や演奏者と接している数少ない一例です。音楽を通してのコミュニケーションは、フィリップの芸術の本質的な側面であり、私たちはそれを大切にしています。

The theme is friendship. I’m deeply, deeply honoured that my friends of the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra have dedicated this concert to my music. I have been a huge admirer of the orchestra for many years and for them to chose this programme is the biggest compliment a composer can receive. I’m also very grateful for my friendship with Douglas Bostock and his constant encouragement to me as a composer. I must also add that it is a great pity my friend Steven Mead is currently unwell and could not travel to Japan to take part, but I’m sure we all wish him well and hopefully he can reschedule his visit for the future.

I would have loved to have been there with you all, but I’m in the middle of my annual family holiday. I wish everyone concerned with the concert a great evening and deserved success. Friendship through music!
